Activewear Care 101: How to Make Your Gear Last Longer
Performance is earned, and it can be protected.
You train with discipline; your gear deserves the same. Smart care keeps fabrics responsive, extends lifespan, and reduces waste. Here is the complete playbook.
Quick Checklist
- Wash cold (20–30°C) on gentle
- Turn inside out; zip and close hardware
- Use enzyme-based sport detergent; no softeners or dryer sheets
- Mesh laundry bag; keep towels and denim separate
- Hang dry in shade; avoid high heat
- Air out between sessions to avoid over-washing
Why Care Matters
- Performance: Wicking, stretch, and recovery rely on intact yarns and finishes.
- Longevity: Fewer replacements equals more reps per garment.
- Sustainability: Cold water and air-drying reduce energy and microfibre shedding.
The 10 Rules
- Wash cold (20–30°C). Heat fatigues elastane and sets odours.
- Turn inside out. Reduce abrasion and protect prints and reflectives.
- Skip softeners and dryer sheets. Coatings block breathability.
- Use the right detergent. Mild, enzyme-based liquid. Avoid chlorine bleach; oxygen bleach only on colourfast lights after a patch test.
- Bag it. Mesh laundry bag prevents snags and pilling; wash similar weights together.
- Gentle cycle, low to medium spin. Rinse well without stretch stress.
- Hang dry in shade. Avoid tumble heat, radiators, and prolonged direct sun.
- Hardware check. Zip zippers, close hook-and-loop, tie drawcords, release toggles.
- Rinse soon after heavy sweat. Wash within 24 hours to limit odour bacteria.
- Store fully dry. Cool, dry place; never pack damp.
Stain and Odour Playbook
- Sweat or persistent odour: Pre-soak 20–30 minutes in cold water with 1–2 tbsp white vinegar per litre or an enzyme pre-soak, then wash cold.
- Oil and sunscreen: Dab liquid detergent, work gently, rinse cold, then wash. Avoid hot water.
- Deodorant marks: Wipe with mild detergent or a 1:4 white-vinegar solution, then wash.
- Blood, grass, or mud: Rinse cold first, enzyme pre-treat, then wash cold. No heat until the stain is gone.
- Dye transfer: Wash darks separately. If it happens, use oxygen bleach on colourfast garments only after a patch test.
Fabric Notes
- Nylon/Elastane and Poly/Elastane knits: Cold wash, no heat, no softeners. Avoid abrasion from denim and zippers.
- Polyester performance knits: Same as above; prompt washing after sweaty sessions curbs odour bacteria.
- Merino blends: Wool cycle with wool-safe detergent. Reshape and dry flat.
- Shells with water-repellent finish: Follow the care label. Some finishes benefit from a brief low tumble or warm iron with a press cloth to reactivate; otherwise line-dry.
Trims, Prints, and Extras
- Do not iron directly on prints and reflectives. If needed, iron inside out on low with a press cloth.
- Close hook-and-loop before washing.
- Empty pockets and remove detachable parts.
Microfibre Responsibility
Use a microfibre-catching wash bag or filter. Shorter, colder cycles and air-drying reduce shedding.
Troubleshooting
- Pilling: Prevent with mesh bags and like-with-like loads; remove with a gentle fabric shaver.
- Lingering odour: Enzyme pre-soak and cold wash. Avoid masking with fragrance.
- Yellowing on whites: Oxygen bleach per label, then cold wash.

FAQs
Can I use fabric softener on activewear?
No. Softeners coat fibres and block moisture management.
Can I tumble dry leggings?
Avoid high heat. Air-dry is best. Heat can weaken elastane and reduce recovery.
How do I remove sweat smell from gym clothes?
Use an enzyme pre-soak or a mild vinegar soak, then a cold wash. Avoid masking odour with fragrance.
Does vinegar damage elastane?
Diluted white vinegar in a short pre-soak is safe for most synthetics. Rinse and wash as normal.
How often should I wash a sports bra?
Rinse or air out after each session and wash every one to two wears, sooner after very sweaty workouts.
Which detergent is best?
A mild, enzyme-based liquid designed for sports fabrics. Avoid chlorine bleach and heavy perfumes.
Do laundry bags really help?
Yes. They reduce abrasion and pilling and help capture microfibres.
Can I wash merino or wool activewear?
Yes. Use a wool cycle and a wool-safe detergent. Reshape and dry flat.
